INTERNATIONALLY  famed  Bangladeshi filmmaker Mostofa Sarwar   Farooki directed No Bed of Roses starring and co-produced by Bollywood’s Irrfan Khan has been effectively banned in Bangladesh. Ever since the film was being made, there were speculations that the film is a biopic based on Bangladeshi writer and filmmaker Humayun Ahmed (1948-2012) who had divorced his wife for 27 years to marry an actress who was 33 years his junior. Although the director had denied the rumours about the biopic, the film has been banned in reports The Bangladesh Film Development Corporation’s (BFDC)’s Joint Venture Preview Committee had  approved the script of the movie on March 8, 2016, after which the film went into production. The completed film was previewed for the BFDC on February 12, 2017 and received a No Objection Certificate on February 15.

BUT The BFDC one day sent the production house a letter stating that the certificate had been cancelled due to a letter from the Bangladesh Information Ministry. Irrfan said: “I am really surprised to know that the government of Bangladesh has blocked the film. This is a humane story that deals with complex male and female relationships in a subtle and balanced way. What harm will it cause to the society if seen?”

The film commences with disclaimer that it has no resemblance to any real life characters alive or dead. The film had received a green light from Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (BFDC) last year and this year on February 12, it had received a No Objection Certificate from BFDC. Director Mostofa Sarwar Farooki, 43, noted for his works often switching between a real and quasi-real world, is of the view that the makers should have approached BFDC for a certificate before they approached the censor board. No reason was given for banning the movie. The film is about a subject related to a man marrying a much younger girl but it did not have any explicit content and did not violate any censor code, he added.Farooki is planning to take the matter to court. No Bed of Roses is reportedly about a filmmaker named Javed Hasan who divorced his wife of several years to marry an actress who is a classmate of his daughter.
