PADMINI Should Be Okayed By Kshatriya Before Release: Shankersinh Vaghela

THERE seems to be uncertainty whether PADMAVATI, the magnum opus directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali with Deepika Padukone in the titular lead will hit the screen as scheduled on December 1 after former Gujarat Chief Minister Shankersinh Vaghela has called for pre-screening the movie for approval by the Hindu Kshatriya leaders. The Bollywood movie is on Padma or Padmavati ,a 14th century queen of Rajasthan .The film makers  are accused of distorting  historical facts about the  queen who along with several other ladies had jumped into a fire around 1303  to save themselves from  dreaded Alauddin Khilji, the then Sultan of Delhi. He invaded Chittorgarh to take Padmavati, a matchless beauty. Shankar Singh Vaghela, veteran politician, who was associated with the RSS, BJP, Congress, PM Narendra Modi and is a  former Union Minister, has warned of violent protests if its makers failed to do so. “As the movie is expected to be released on December 1, I want Bhansali to first show it to Hindu as well as Kshatriya leaders as people suspect that some facts have been distorted and presented in a wrong way in the movie,” the Kshatriya strongman said in Ahmedabad. Besides Deepika Padukone, other leading stars of the controversial movie are Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor. The Trailer on the film has been released recently. Vaghela said one cannot tamper with historical facts and present them as per one’s wishes to get “cheap publicity”.”If the movie is released without pre-screening, Gujarat will witness violent protests and law and order may go out of control. I apologise to the cinema owners in advance if people take law into their hands,” the former Gujarat Chief Minister said. The Karni Sena representing Rajput community has also demanded pre-screnning.It had disrupted shooting of the film in Rajasthan and other places protesting against twisting history. Vaghela quit the Congress after the Rajya Sabha polls in August and launched a new front, Jan Vikalp, which would field its candidates for the 182 assembly seats in Gujarat going to poll on December 9 and 14.Karni Sena members recently burnt posters of the film after the first look of main characters – Padmavati (Deepika Padukone), Maharawal Ratan Singh (Shahid Kapoor) and Alauddin Khilji (Ranveer Singh) — was released. They also threatened to oppose the screening of the movie in theatres if the facts were distorted.

Over the years , several films were made on Rani Padmavati who was reportedly  from Sri Lanka  married by Maharaja Ratan Sinh.Elite Rajput women of Rajasthan have characterised Padmini as a historical figure ,an epitome of  Rajput womanhood. Padmini has become a symbol of valour and sacrifice in Rajput history.   Kolkata based Debaki Bose directed silent film Kamonar Agun or Flames of Flesh in 1930 and the Hindi language Maharani Padmini  was made in 1964.In 1963, for the first time, this story was made into film in Tamil as Chittoor Rani Padmini written by C. V. Sridhar and directed by Chitrapu Narayana Rao starring  legendary Tamil  actor Sivaji Ganesan and Vyjayanthimala  who later became a Bollywood’s dream girl,  in lead roles.Anyway, tale about Padmini has also inspired several poets to compose poems and lyrics.
