TAAPASEE & Akshay Kumar Starrer Naam Shabana Conveys A Message

NAAM SHABANA  is one of the Hindi  movies  released recently has an offbeat storyline .Admittedly, it may not be the first film about a young women’s exploits as a secret agent .South India’s heartthrob Taapasee Pannu ,a software professional who has turned actress after a successful stint as model, plays the lead. She is ably supported by one of India’s top super heroes Akshay Kumar, Manoj Bajpayee, versatile actor Anupam Kher, Prithviraj Sukumaran, Taher Shabbir and Veerendra Saxena.

Director Shivam Nair in the 88 -long narrates how Shabana Khan portrayed with aplomb by Taapasee seeks revenge for the murder of the youth she loved and dreaming of entering into wedlock. Shabana has been recruiting as the special agent who is entrusted the task of assassinating a deadly arms dealer played by Prithviraj by the Indian Intelligence Agencies.

In the first half, movie goers watch the protagonist and her love interest, Jai too much. It is only post-intermission, especially the last 35 minutes in which proceedings pick up. Sticking to a typical-action drama narrative moving from Mumbai to Goa, Vienna to Kuala Lumpur, with the arms dealer and the ISI agents playing a cat-and-mouse game we read about in newspapers. The film cannot be dubbed as an escapist fare than a realistic one as one film critic opines. In Naam Shabana, we see a real picture of the underworld committed to harming the society. The film hit theatres across the country on Friday March 31 and collected about 4.75 crore INR (nett) on its opening day.  Except for a few stray sequences in which the agile Taapasee Pannu faces up  the bad guys, and the ones in which co-star Akshay Kumar moves in to demonstrate how the big boys do it, there is nothing either novel or interesting about the film, says one critic.

Shabana doesn’t seem to have a ‘pet’ name. She means business. What’s not to like about a film which top lines a young woman capable of kicking serious butt? Producer- writer Neeraj Pandey conveys a message of patriotic quotient through his latest film and hence he has assigned the role to Shabana Khan for this purpose.

Pannu plays Shabana, a girl with a dark past, who lives with her mother, and who is hand-picked to join a deep-cover intelligence group that appears to have sweeping powers to target and eliminate the nation’s enemies in three days .Some characters may remind us of Pandey’s BABY released in 2015. Naam Shabana gives us her back-story which involves a troubled childhood and a doomed relationship. Pannu left an impression in Baby. Here, she gets a role many leading ladies would kill for, and she is believable when she is throwing punches, and getting punched in turn, but right through she is strangely held in, and strictly one-note. Was she thwarted by the demands of her part, or was she instructed to keep her mien closed, leaving her much too stiff? Asks  TOI. A team of sleuths led by Manoj Bajpayee’s is after a global arms kingpin who is also involved in trafficking and drugs. Prithviraj Sukumaran plays the chief villain, suited booted, wearing diamond in ears.

Taran adarsh, trade analyst, tweets “Taapasee is terrific in #NaamShabana… But the film lacks the bite and punch of #Baby. Engaging in parts only… Writing plays spoilsport…” ‏ Naam Shabana lacks the thrill + nail-biting finale of #Baby. Manoj Bajpayee, Prithviraj are super. Akshay interval point intro fantastic…

One movie-goer says :” just watched #NaamShabana and felt your(Taapsee’s) Action packed & phenomenal performance. Should I call you a Lady Akshay Kumar?

Jeetu @JokerJeetu tweets @Taapasee Oye star online ho na. You just rocked.. Subah se gaayab tha. I enjoyed movie #NaamShabana *whistles* in theatre. tum HERO ho yaar.

Critics and movie fans are seldom on the same page. Since majority of the movie buffs appreciate NAAM SHABANA, it is worth sitting through with your family and friends.
