NEWTON, a political satire Hindi movie made in  2017 and directed by Amit V Masurkar,has been selected over  26  movies as India’s entry  to the prestigious Oscars 2018 to  be held on March 4 at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre, Los Angles. It will compete in the foreign language categories. Produced by Drishyam Films, the film is Masurkar’s second feature after his debut film, the slacker comedy independent film Sulemani Keeda in 2013. Newton was highly acclaimed when it was premiered   in the Forum section of the 67th Berlin International Film Festival .It is also be screened at the Tribeca Film Festival where it screens in the International Narrative Competition section. It was selected as the Indian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 90th Academy Awards. The 106- minute movie is about Newton Kumar, a rookie government clerk who is assigned election duty in a Naxal infested constituency in the jungles of Chhattisgarh. The Government is fighting the extreme left forces to bring them to the mainstream. New Ton Kumar is faced with the apathy of security forces and the trigger happy guerrillas.  He is mindful of his duty to ensure free, fair and peaceful polling despite the odds against him. He is disappointed when the voters don’t turn up for the election. Later, when a foreign reporter turns up at the polling station, the voters are forced to come out to exercise their franchise. Newton realizes that they have no idea about what the election is about. He desperately tries to educate them but the head of the security forces tells villagers that the ATM which they see for the first time in their life is a toy. The foreign reporter gets a juicy story about India’s democracy. Newton wants to sit at the polling booth till the stipulated time but is forced to flee due to a Naxal attack. Later, he is convinced it is staged by the police. On the way back he decides to collect votes of three villagers who turn up suddenly from the forest when Newton was being escorted back to the polling booth. The chief of security decline to oblige them. Newton snatches his gun from the security forces chief till the villagers cast their votes. After the polling the security forces beat him up out of frustration. Rajkumar Rao, a recipient of National Film and Filmfare awards, plays the lead role and supported by Pankaj Tripathi as Aatma Singh,Anjali Patil as Malko,Raghubir Yadav as Loknath.Newton was released in 350 theatres on September 22.The   Hindustan Times says “Newton is one of the finest political satires we have seen in the last couple of years. It refrains from taking sides and offers a humorous take on state versus the Maoists bloody battle.” The Huffington Post, the political and liberal website of USA, has commented” Newton is a touching, personal and very human film about the strength of one very resolute rookie election clerk to uphold the democratic process in a rebel-threatened area.”
