THE ruling BJP has won a massive mandate by getting over two-thirds majority in the 404 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly, the nation’s biggest assembly in term of number of seats as well winning  the hilly state of Uttarakhand which was part of UP till 2004. Incidentally, the Himalayan state was granted statehood by the first NDA Government at the centre headed by Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

While the biggest state in India was being ruled by the Samajwadi Party and the hilly state with 70 assembly seats was under the Congress. The SP headed by Akhilesh Yadav in alliance with the Congress had contested the seven phased elections has been routed. The SP Government was accused of corruption, nepotism and promoting communalities BJP.

BJP’s prominent woman face Smriti Irani, also heading the Textile Ministry at the Centre, says all sections of the electorate across caste and religious faiths have voted for the BJP and its allies .The Modi government is pledged to ensure Sab Ke Saath, Sab Ka Vikas Policy in the diverse nation.

NDA leaders hailed the historic electoral victory  as a vindication of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s popularity and his pro-poor policies. Congress has lost all four seats in Amethi district as BJP wins three and SP has won the fourth seat comprising the Parliamentary Constituency of Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi.

Sitting MLA Rakesh Pratap Singh of SP has retained his Gauriganj seat defeating Congress nominee Mohammad Naeem by more than 26,000 votes despite the two parties forging an electoral alliance.

BJP nominee Garima Singh ,the estranged spouse of  Congress leader Sanjay Singh ,polled 63,912 in Amethi defeating her nearest rival and tainted Minister Gayatri Prasad Prajapati of Samajwadi Party who received 58,94 1 votes.

But BJP, which was in power with SAD for a decade in Punjab near Pakistan border, has been routed by the Congress. Former CM Captain Amarendra Singh, Maharaja of Patiala, has come back to power by achieving stunning victory. The Punjab victory is being called a consolation prize for the country’s oldest political party which is now confined to a very few states. The latest results from UP are  BJP      –        324, SP + CONG-        54, BSP- 19 & others-  5.

In the 117 Member Punjab Legislative Assembly Congress has won 76 seats, AAP 20, SAD 15 & BJP. Elections were held for the 70 Member Uttarakhand Assembly.BJP has won 56, Congress 11 and others 2.

In the 40 –Member Goa assembly, Congress has won 17, BJP 13, NCP 1, MGP 3, GFP 3 and Independent 3. In Manipur, Congress has won 28, BJP 21 and others 7. The Naga People’s Front says they will support any non-Congress government and that they will write to Manipur governor. The NPF won four seats, the Congress 28 and BJP 21 out of the 60 seats counted so far.

The election has come as a great setback to the Delhi based AAP which had been campaigning in Punjab and Goa for extending its footprint beyond the national capital. Kashmir leader and former CM Omar Abdullah called today’s results a “tsunami,” and predicted that the BJP is not only in a position to win the Parliamentary elections in 2019 but also in 2024.

Amit Shah, BJP’s National President, who crafted and conducted the election strategy in UP, said the results have capitulated Modi to the stature of the “tallest leader” since India’s Independence.

“The only factor for the win is the performance of the Modi government,” Shah told a press conference. “The outcome has shown the faith the poor have reposed in Modi.Even his political rivals will have to admit that he has emerged as the tallest leader in the country since Independence,” he said.”This is the victory of the corruption-free rule and pro-poor polices under the leadership” of Modi, he had tweeted earlier. The results set off celebrations in BJP offices and its strongholds. Party members danced and distributed sweets on streets and BJP offices. Women gathered in groups to watch results on TV, danced as the results came in.

“BJP has reached new heights in Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh and changed the political picture of the country,” Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said amid scenes of jubilation at party offices in UP.

BSP supremo alleged that EVMs were tampered with to ensure BJP’s victory. She provided no evidence for her allegation, and it is unlikely to be taken seriously. Her party finished a distant third in UP. The Election Commission   has refuted her accusation saying there is no merit in it at all .There is “no merit” in Mayawati’s allegations that EVM tampering affected the election results. EC says It has ”firm conviction and complete satisfaction” that the equipment cannot be tampered with”. The BJP, which had just 47 seats in the outgoing Assembly, polled an estimated 40 per cent of votes in the most riveting contest seen as a game changer and a virtual referendum on Modi’s popularity and demonetisation.

Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi acknowledged that the party’s defeat was massive.

“Yes, UP is a bad loss, it hurts…I agree that, in UP, we need fundamental restructuring thinking for the Congress as a whole. These have to be hard, tough decisions about strategy,” Singhvi said. Another Congress leader, Shakeel Ahmad, attributed the party’s poor show in UP to “public mood” and said its performance will be “scrutinised”.

Incidentally, the  previous best showing by BJP in UP was in 1991, at the height of Ram Janam Bhoomi movement, when it got majority on its own winning 221 seats out of 425 in an undivided state.
