GOI Accepts in Principle Issue Related To Putting Petrol & Diesel Under GST Regime

The Government has accepted in principle the demand for bringing petrol and diesel under The Goods and Services Tax (GST) being implemented across the nation from July 1.But the process to complete the exercise will take about one year and half .GOI will place the demand before the GST Council which comprises representatives of all States and The Union Territories. If they approve proposal for bringing the two petroleum products under the purview of GST, Petroleum Ministry can take necessary steps, Pradhan told a news conference at Gandhinagar on Saturday.  Replying to a query by a reporter, Pradhan said in principle GOI has accepted that petrol and diesel should be incorporated in the GST. But the Centre is one of the parties in the GST Council where all the state governments are also members. We will take up the issue, but it will take about a year and a half for the process to be completed,” Pradhan said in a media conference here today. The prices of petrol and diesel could come down by at least Rs 25 per litre if these are under GST, he said.  Speaking about  LPG connections,  Pradhan said that in just three years, the Modi government had provided more than 8.5 crore new LPG  connections across the nation as against only 13 crore connections provided in 40 years from 1955 to 1995 by  previous regimes. In a couple of months, every household in Gujarat will have LPG connection. Against the national average of 76 per cent domestic gas connections, only 27 per cent had been given in Amethi Parliamentary constituency of three generations of Nehru-Gandhi family, Pradhan said.   Replying to another reporter, Pradhan GOI was committed to protect ecology and environment and it has decided to curb import of petroleum coke. This is believed to be a major polluter.
