PRIYA Ranjan Dasmunsi, Ex-Union Minister, Passes Away


PRIYA Ranjan Dasmunsi, former Union Minister, passed away on Monday in Delhi after remaining in coma   for eight years. He was 72 and is survived by wife Deepa Dasmunsi, who was Minister of State at the Centre, and son Priyadeep Dasmunsi. “He died at 12.10 p.m. today (Monday). He had been critically ill for the past one month and unfortunately succumbed to his illness,” said Apollo Hospital in a statement. He was a football enthusiast and headed The All India Football Federation for close to 20 years. In 1994, he married Deepa Dasmunsi, a social worker from Kolkata. Deepa claimed that she used to discuss politics and other issues related to Bengal, Chrirbander,his birthplace, now in Bangladesh, songs, food and football .His body is  flown to Kolkata for last rites. Senior leaders from Congress and BJP rushed to Apollo Hospital after receiving the news.Dasmunsi was Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister when he suffered a massive stroke in 2008 leaving him paralysed and unable to speak. Blood supply to a part of his brain was cut off causing irreversible damage. His body systems were functional but he breathed through a tracheotomy tube attached to his neck and was fed through a PEG tube in his stomach. All basic life functions like breathing, blood pressure, sleep-awake cycle were stable but he was not conscious of his surroundings. Besides his wife Deepa Dasmunsi, he is survived by son Priyadeep Dasmunsi. His body was taken to the Congress headquarters in New Delhi where top party leaders including its vice-president Rahul Gandhi paid homage. Congress president Sonia Gandhi said Dasmunsi was a “devout” political activist and “one of the tallest” leaders of West Bengal. She said Dasmunsi served the party and government “illustriously. His work at the immense work at the grassroots would be remembered by posterity, she added. Dasmunsi, one of the most popular youth Congress leaders in India, had   headed the Youth Congress in West Bengal from 1970 to 1971. He entered the Lok Sabha in 1971. He was Union Minister of State for Commerce in 1985.  He was a parliamentarian who enjoyed cross-party goodwill and was Union parliamentary affairs minister when he suffered a massive stroke that left him paralysed in 2008. Dasmunsi has been in Apollo Hospital since 2008, after he suffered a stroke and a paralytic attack. He was a Member of 14th Lok Sabha and represented the Raigunj Lok Sabha constituency in North Bengal. He headed the glamorous Ministry of Information and Broadcasting during the first term of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Dasmunsi’s dream to set up an AIIMS-like hospital in Raigunj remained unfulfilled. Former President Pranab Mukherjee tweeted “Deeply saddened at the passing away of Shri Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi. His loss will be felt forever. Heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.”
