RAHUL Gandhi is likely to be elected unopposed to succeed her mother Sonia Gandhi, who is the longest ever AICC President since 1998.Today is the last date for filing nominations. He is the only candidate who filed nomination papers on Monday. No one else filed papers till Sunday, according to Mullapally Ramachandran, Chairman of the party’s Central Election Authority. Sonia Gandhi and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh are among the proposers for the candidature of Rahul Gandhi for the party chief’s post of India’s oldest political party  founded in 1885.He will be the fifth from Nehru-Gandhi family to become Congress President after Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi.

The last date for withdrawal of candidature is December 11, and the poll, if necessary, will be held on December 16 and the counting will take place on December 19. If there is no other candidate, he will be declared elected on December 11.Delhi born Rahul Gandhi, 47, was first elected to the Lok Sabha from Amethi in 2004 and was re-elected in 2009 and 2014.He was appointed General Secretary in 2007 and Vice President six years later.   Senior party leaders Kamal Nath, Sheila Dikshit, Motilal Vora and Tarun Gogoi filed the first set of nominations  proposing for Rahul. After filing his nomination papers, Rahul met Manmohan Singh, Mohsina Kidwai, Dikshit and other senior Congress leaders .

As per the election schedule , it will be confirmed on Tuesday whether he  is the lone candidate  for the coveted post after the names of contenders will be published after scrutiny of nominations.

If there are no contenders, the AICC will make the final announcement of his name on 11 December – the last date for withdrawal of nomination. He will become AICC supremo when the Opposition in India remains divided. There remains a big question whether all opposition parties will close their ranks and unite under his leadership to take on the surging BJP in the 2019 Lok Sabha poll. Some Opposition leaders including  CPI-M  General Secretary Sitaram Yechury  has gone public  saying  Rahul cannot replace his mother, Sonia, who was “the glue” that held the Opposition together.

He has an uphill task to rebuild the party in the first place in most of the states where it has been reduced a mere sign board. Various affiliates to the party as expected have hailed the rising Son of the grand old party’s first family.
