RAHUL Gandhi Is Set To Take Over As Congress President In December


ENDING all speculation The Congress Working Committee (CWC) on Monday paved the way for the party’s Vice President Rahul Gandhi to succeed her mother Sonia Gandhi, its longest ever serving President. The CWC  chaired by Sonia Gandhi and attended most of its senior leaders has finalised schedule to elect the next party president  to take over from the 70 years old ailing  supremo before the crucial    Gujarat  assembly elections. The 47-year-old Rahul Gandhi is set to succeed his mother and is expected to be elected unopposed .Italy born Sonia Gandhi took over the reins of the country’s oldest political party from Sitaram Kesri in 1998. Under her leadership, the party formed a coalition government at the Centre for two terms defeating Atal Behari Vajpayee and Lal Krishna Advani headed BJP.The Congress will issue the poll notification on December 1 and if anyone would want to contend for the succession to the party presidency, he/she will have to file nomination papers by December 4.The party will scrutinise the nominations on December 5 and allow contender(s), if there any, to withdraw the nomination by December 11.Election, if there are contender(s), would be held on December 16 and results announced on December 19.The Congress Spokesman said if there is no other contender for the post, the party would announce Rahul’s candidature on the last date of scrutiny on  December 5.Sonia Gandhi could not campaign for the assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Goa, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh due to her ill- health. The elder son of Rajiv and Sonia Gandhi has age on his side but he has multiple tasks the foremost being rebuilding the 131 year –old political outfit before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections apart from winning the ongoing Gujarat elections.
