DILEEP, noted Malayalam Movie actor-producer and distributor, arrested for the abduction and molestation of a film actress in February, was on Tuesday remanded in custody. The popular actress was abducted on February 17 while she was on her way home after a shoot. Some men got into her car on the way to Kochi and allegedly sexually assaulted her. They also took photos and videos of the act to blackmail the actress.

He has been removed as member from various film associations. On Monday, he was questioned at an undisclosed location near Aluva, and later the police probe team recorded the arrest of the actor. He was brought to the Aluva Police Club.”I am innocent and I will prove my innocence. I was trapped,” the actor said on Tuesday before being taken to the Aluva sub-jail. Dileep, 49, born Gopalkrishnan, has starred in over 130 films. The film fraternity that had committed to steadfastly stand by its ‘children’, the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists, better known as AMMA meaning mother in Malayalam, did not waste time in declaring  him persona non grata  after he was arrested. The charge against him is alleged conspiratorial role in the abduction and molestation of the actress. Film Employees’ Federation of Kerala (FEFKA) also removed Dileep from its organisation. Several actors such as Mukesh and KB Ganesh Kumar, also a former Minister, had lashed out at media at an AMMA press conference accusing journalists of misreporting facts about the case. Police justified Dileep’s arrest claiming that it had irrefutable evidence against the actor’s role in the abduction of the actress. The actor was subjected to two rounds of intense questioning following which the move to arrest him was taken by the Police. It is being widely reported that the police have 19 pieces of strong evidence on the basis of which they found reason to arrest Dileep. The actor is likely to be named as second accused in the case after ‘Pulsar’ Suni who master-minded the abduction and alleged molestation of the actress on February 17 earlier this year. Dileep is alleged to have offered Suni a ‘quotation’ of Rs 1.5 crore for the same. The actor was questioned again for the second time Monday for several hours during which time he is alleged to have even broken down at one point when the evidence was presented before him. Suni’s alleged letter to Dileep that was leaked to media, his phone conversations that were tapped and the meetings he reportedly had with the actor were the basis for the police’s move to arrest him. Dileep had even filed a case in April complaining of harassment and blackmailing from Suni and his associates. Media reports say that Dileep’s friend and director Nadirshah, who was earlier questioned by the police, will be arrested soon.It may be recalled that in February this year, the actress was allegedly harassed inside her car for two hours by the accused who had forced their way into the vehicle and later escaped in a busy area in Kochi.

Reacting to his arrest, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has said   law will take its course.”Anyone who has done a wrong, irrespective of the stature, will be proceeded against. The probe is continuing and none who did a wrong will be allowed to escape,” said Vijayan. Gender sensitive Keralites remain shocked over the alleged kidnapping and alleged assault on the actress. As his counsel has decided to approach the Kerala High Court for bail, The  Executives of Association of Malayalam Movies Artistes which was being criticised by  several quarters over its ambivalent stand on the molestation issue has  removed Dileep as Treasurer and Member soon after he was taken into custody.
