ANUPAM Kher, director-producer and  who has acted in over 500 films and several plays, has been appointed Chairman of the Pune based Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) under the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting  . He succeeds former television actor Gajendra Chauhan who headed the FTTI for two years. Shimla born 62 years old Anupam Kher had previously held the post of chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification and the National School of Drama in India. The Kashmiri Pandit is mostly working in Hindi films. He has also appeared in acclaimed international films such as the 2002 Golden Globe. Spouse is BJP’s Lok Sabha MP Kirron Kher from Chandigarh. His upcoming movies include Aiyaary, The Accidental Prime Minister, and Ranchi Diaries. Anupam Kher coming from a humble background has won the Filmfare Award for Best Performance in a Comic Role five times. For his performance in the 1988 film Vijay he won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor. He has been awarded Padma Bhushan for his contribution to the Indian cinema and art. Kher is a recipient of the Padma Shri in 2004 and the Padma Bhushan in 2016.

FTII  was in the past was  headed by legendary film personalities including Shyam Benegal, Adoor Gopalakrishnan, Saeed Mirza, Mahesh Bhatt, Mrinal Sen, Vinod Khanna and Girish Karnad.Many popular film personalities have come out of FTII.Among them were  Naseeruddin Shah, Jaya Bachchan, Shabana Azmi, Shatrughan Sinha, Raza Murad, Resul Pookutty and the late Smita Patil and Om Puri. Anupam, who began his acting career with “Saaransh” in 1984, also has his own acting institute Actor Prepares.Kirron Kher said Anupam was the right choice to head the FTII which provides training in acting, direction and other technical aspects of film making in a country which is one of the largest producers of movies.”My husband is a very fine actor. He has been in the film industry for so many years. He is very capable of (being FTII head).”He has been teaching acting for so long. He is the only person who earlier headed CBFC, then National School of Drama and now has been appointed Chairman of FTII, she added. Filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar tweeted: “Heartiest congratulations to Anupam Kher for being appointed as the Chairman of FTII.”Filmmaker Pritish Nandy called it an “excellent change” at FTII. “Finally, the government is listening to us, “he tweeted.Actor Kabir Bedi said “ I am sure Anupam “would do wonders” in his new role.The term of Gajendra Chauhan ended in March. He had a controversial tenure as head of the institute. A notification regarding Kher’s appointment has been issued by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting.
