KUNDAN Shah, Famous Hindi Film Maker ,Passes Away


A Pall of gloom descended on Bollywood as soon as TV channels broke the news about sad demise of noted Hindi film director –actor and screen writer Kundan Shah at his Mumbai residence on Friday night following  a heart attack. He was 69.Shah was best known for directing the 1983 satirical film, ‘Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro’ – his first – for which he received the National Award.The film, featuring Naseeruddin Shah, Ravi Baswani, Om Puri, Pankaj Kapur, Satish Shah, Satish Kaushik, Bhakti Barve and Neena Gupta, despite a failure at the box office, it became a  cult status. He also co-directed popular Hindi TV show ‘Nukkad,’ which aired on Doordarshan from 1986 to 1987, and directed comedy sitcom ‘Wagle Ki Duniya,’ based on characters created by RK Laxman. The latter ran from 1988 to 1990.An alumni in film direction of the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune, he was famed for making award winning movies. Several Bollywood personalities condoled Shah’s death on Twitter. Eminent film maker Subhash Ghai says “Good bye #kundan shah. We all shall remember u for your great films with us n in history Indian cinema. A brave man Kundan Shah, who added vigour to the alternate cinema stream with movies like Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro has left us, says Mahesh Bhat on Twitter. Kundan Shah first film name is Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro released in 1983. Some of the famous films in which Kundan Shah acted are Khamosh, Kya Kehna, dil hai Tumhara, The three sisters, Ek Se BadhKar ek, Hum to Mohabbat Karega. Some of the film fare awards the actor received are Film fare award critics for best movie- Kabhi Haan kabhi naa, National Film Award as Indira Gandhi Award for Best First Film of a Director for Jaane bhi do yaaro. His next “Kya Kehna”, was once again a story that was ahead of its time and dealt with teenage pregnancy and the stigma attached to it. The movie was a box office success and became one of the highest grossing films in 2000. The film helped establish Preity Zinta’s career in the Hindi film industry. The director made a number of films after “Kya Kehna”, but sadly commercial success eluded him. Shah’s sudden demise shocked his friends in the industry. His friend and colleague Satish Shah, who played one of the principal characters in “Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro” told waiting media “I have reached his house. It is really sad.”Director Hansal Mehta paid tributes to Shah by posting a black and white photograph of “Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro” team.
