PRIME Minister Narendra Modi, Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Jammu   Kashmir leader Bhim Singh have expressed shock over the demise of veteran Congress leader Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi who passed away after remaining in coma for 8 years in Delhi on Monday.  “Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi was a popular leader with rich political and administrative experience. He did notable work to popularise football in India. Saddened by his demise. My thoughts are with Deepa Dasmunsi ji and family as well as his supporters” PM Modi added. Mamata Banerjee, who was her former colleague in Youth Congress, said he was a popular leader. His death was a national loss, she said. He will be laid to rest in his North Bengal Constituency with full State Honours, she added.   Bengal government offices remained closed on Monday from 2 pm following the death of Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi. There is provision for granting half day leave following death of Central or state minister. Dasmunsi was a Union minister when he suffered paralysis in October 2008 and was bed ridden since then. She expressed her condolence over the death of Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi and said that the last rites would be performed with gun salute at Kaliagunj.The CM said: He was in a state of coma, though he was alive but was unable to realize anything. Such a death for an active and popular leader like Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi is really painful, the CM said. Professor Bhim Singh, senior Supreme Court Advocate and human rights activist, who was closely associated with Dasmunsi, said he was   “A dear friend, philosopher, a revolutionary by birth and a great noble friend. But the footprints he left behind shall always show the path towards humanism combined with total commitment to nationalism with malice to none.” Prof.Bhim Singh said.He recalled after he had returned to India completing world tour on bike, he called on the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. She called Chanderjit Yadav, the then General Secretary of Indian National Congress (In- charge Youth), to her office and then Dasmunsi, then President of Indian Youth Congress, at her Safdarjung Road residence.  Prof.Bhim Singh was inducted into Indian Youth Congress by Gandhi, he added.  .Bhim Singh was appointed President of Jammu &Kashmir Youth Congress by Dasmunsi on the advice of Indira Gandhi. Indira Gandhi advised Bhim Singh to organize youth of J&K on secular footing and honest approach. Bhim Singh was expelled from Jammu and Kashmir by the Congress Government for launching a movement against corruption. Congress was ruling J&K then, he said. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan   and Union Minister Harshavardhan have also conveyed their deep condolences to the bereaved family.(IMAGE : courtesy TOI)
