SUMITRA Sanyal, Yesteryear Movie Actress, Passes Away


TOLLYWOOD and Bollywood’s actress Sumita Sanyal has passed away at the age of 71 in her Deshapriya Park residence in Kolkata .Sumitra , who  was married to film editor Subodh Roy, is survived by a son .She made her debut in Bengali film  ‘Khokhababur Pratyabartan’  in  1960. She starred in over 50 Bengali and Hindi movies including ‘Sagina Mahato’ opposite Dilip Kumar and in the lead role in ‘Kuheli’ alongside Biswajit and Sandhya Roy.Born as Manjula Sanyal on October 9, 1945  in Darjeeling, her  Hindi movies include Anand (1971), Guddi (1971), Aashirwad (1968) and Mere Apne (1971).

Sumitra was a popular face among Bengali movie buffs in the 70s and 80s.She also acted in some memorable Hindi films including ‘Anand’ in 1970 movie opposite Amitabh Bachchan and Rajesh Khanna. She is also remembered for her performances in Hindi films like ‘Guddi’, ‘Aashirwad’ and ‘Mere Apne’. Critics say apart from her brilliant contribution to Bengali cinema, she is best known for performance in Anand.

Her family sources said the actress died of heart failure in her south Kolkata residence around 10:30 am on Sunday. The actress’ family revealed that she was suffering from old-age related medical issues. Tweets of condolence messages began pouring in with Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee mourning her death on Twitter, saying: “Saddened at the passing of veteran actress Sumita Sanyal. My condolences to her family, friends and fans.” Actor Prosenjit Chatterjee, her former co-star, has also condoled Sumitra‘s demise .He tweeted :  “Saddened to hear about the demise of the veteran actress Sumita Sanyal. May her soul rest in peace.

She had also co-starred with Uttam Kumar,Bengal’s deceased matinee idol, and portrayed the role of an ambitious actress in Nayak  written and directed by internationally  noted and Oscar winning  movie maker Satyajit Ray. Her notable Tollywood movies are Tarun Majumdar’s 1971 suspense thriller Kuheli, Teen Bhubhaner Parey, Apanjan and Deya Neya. She also shared screen space with Saira Banu and Dilip Kumar in 1970 Bengali film Sagina Mahato directed by Tapan Sinha, an iconic movie maker. Her Bollywood projects include Guddi, Mere Apne and The Peacock Spring.
